Coolaroo triangular shade sails

A triangular Coolaroo shade sail creates targeted shade using only three anchor points, making it particularly useful for patios, gardens, outdoor dining and more irregular spaces.

Coolaroo is a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian manufacturer GALE Pacific. Its breathable knitted HDPE fabrics are engineered for long-term outdoor use, with long-lasting UV protection built into the core of every fibre of the fabric.

Coolaroo triangular shade sails

Why choose a triangular shade sail?

A triangle needs only three anchor points and gives considerable flexibility for patios, gardens, seating areas and more unusual layouts.

Several triangles can be offset or slightly overlapped, making them particularly effective for larger, layered or architectural shade installations.

For comparable overall dimensions, a triangle provides less shaded area than a square or rectangle, so choose the shape according to the coverage you actually need.

Choosing the right triangular shade sail size

The stated dimensions are the size of the sail itself, not the distance between the three anchor points. Choose a sail that covers the required area while still leaving enough room at every corner for proper tensioning.

With our standard fittings, normally allow 280–365 mm between each corner of the sail and its anchor point. Measure all three sides between your proposed anchors before choosing the sail size. If an anchor point is further away, the connection can be extended using suitably rated steel cable or chain.

With several triangles, each sail needs its own three tension points and must be adjustable independently. Our installation guide explains spacing, fixing heights, slope and correct tension.

Why Coolaroo? Australian shade protection engineered to last

Coolaroo is a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian manufacturer GALE Pacific, created specifically to bring GALE Pacific’s specialist knitted HDPE shade products to the consumer market. GALE Pacific was founded in Melbourne in 1951 and pioneered the world’s first knitted shadecloth in the 1970s. Coolaroo therefore benefits directly from decades of GALE Pacific research, manufacturing expertise and experience developing technical fabrics for some of the world’s most demanding UV and outdoor conditions. GALE Pacific later established the world’s largest knitted shadecloth manufacturing facility and today is a global leader in advanced polymer textiles.

The fabric is what makes Coolaroo special. Its knitted HDPE is designed for prolonged outdoor exposure, with long-lasting UV protection built into the core of every fibre of the fabric. Coolaroo engineers its shade fabric to retain its colour, flexibility and performance through years of intense UV exposure, including the demanding conditions found in Australia. The knitted construction allows air to circulate and hot air to escape from beneath the sail, while the fibres do not absorb moisture, helping the material resist mould and mildew. Coolaroo shade sails can block up to 95% of harmful UV radiation and are endorsed by Cancer Council Australia.

Coolaroo shade sails are produced in a number of different fabric ranges and performance levels. This page shows only the ranges currently available as triangular sails. For each range, the fabric, fabric weight and manufacturer’s fabric guarantee are taken directly from our product database so the comparison remains accurate as stock changes.

Wind and tension

A triangular sail must be kept under firm, even tension. A loose sail moves more in the wind, loses its intended shape and transfers irregular loads to the three anchor points.

Breathable rather than solid fabric

Coolaroo knitted HDPE allows air to circulate and hot air to escape from beneath the sail. A solid waterproof sheet can provide rain protection, but it also traps more heat and requires more careful management of slope and water runoff.

Multiple triangular sails

Triangles work particularly well in combinations. Several sails can be offset or slightly overlapped to create a larger shaded area while each sail remains independently and correctly tensioned.

Fixings and posts

Every corner needs a structurally suitable anchor point. Whether wall, existing structure or post, the support must be properly sized for the loads created by a firmly tensioned shade sail.

Installing a triangular shade sail correctly

A triangular shade sail uses three anchor points. Each must be strong enough for the loads created by a correctly tensioned sail, and the three points must allow the tension to be adjusted evenly.

With our standard fittings, normally allow 280–365 mm between each sail corner and its anchor point. Different fixing heights create a more dynamic shape, improve tension and help water run off.

If you install several triangles, each sail must be capable of being tensioned independently. For larger fixing distances, suitably rated steel cable or chain can be used to extend the connection.

How does the fixing system work?

Correctly tensioning a triangular shade sail is essential for a stable and durable installation. Each of the three corners must connect to a strong anchor point using fittings that provide both secure connection and precise tension adjustment.

Turnbuckle

Turnbuckle

The turnbuckle progressively tensions the sail and helps balance the adjustment between all three corners. A correctly tensioned sail keeps its shape and moves less in the wind.

Snap hook

Snap hook

The snap hook provides a quick connection between the sail and fixing system and makes installation, adjustment and removal easier.

Pad eye or anchor Pad eye or anchor

Pad eye or anchor

The pad eye creates a screwed anchor point on a suitable structure. The eye anchor provides the alternative fixing method according to the support available.

All components in our kits are made from marine-grade 316 stainless steel, particularly resistant to corrosion and suitable for durable outdoor use.
