Coolaroo rectangular shade sails

A 5 x 3 m rectangular Coolaroo shade sail is particularly well suited to long patios, outdoor dining tables, poolside areas and other spaces where shade needs to extend in one direction. We specialise exclusively in Coolaroo, a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian manufacturer GALE Pacific, whose technical knitted HDPE fabrics are engineered for long-term outdoor use, with long-lasting UV protection built into the core of every fibre of the fabric.

Four anchor points create a regular shade area along the length of the space, combining a particularly practical shape with genuine Coolaroo technical shade fabric.

Why choose a rectangular shade sail?

A rectangle makes efficient use of long or narrow outdoor areas.

Four fixing points provide a regular, clearly aligned area of shade.

For compact spaces compare square sails; for layered layouts compare triangles.

The 5 x 3 m Coolaroo rectangle – choose the right fabric for your installation

Our rectangular Coolaroo shade sails are available in the established 5 x 3 m format, a particularly useful proportion for outdoor dining tables, long patios, seating areas, poolside spaces and other rectangular areas.

Across the ranges currently available, the dimensions remain the same, so the important choice is the fabric, fabric weight, manufacturer’s guarantee and performance level that best suits the installation. The specification for each available range is shown directly above its products and updates automatically as stock changes.

The 5 x 3 m dimensions are the size of the sail itself, not the distance between anchor points. With our standard fittings, normally allow 280–365 mm between each corner of the sail and its anchor point. Where the anchor is further away, the connection can be extended using suitably rated steel cable or chain.

Why Coolaroo? Australian shade technology developed over generations

Coolaroo is a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian manufacturer GALE Pacific, created specifically to bring GALE Pacific’s specialist knitted HDPE shade products to the consumer market. GALE Pacific was founded in Melbourne in 1951 and pioneered the world’s first knitted shadecloth in the 1970s. Coolaroo therefore benefits directly from decades of GALE Pacific research, manufacturing expertise and experience developing technical fabrics for some of the world’s most demanding UV and outdoor conditions. GALE Pacific later established the world’s largest knitted shadecloth manufacturing facility and today is a global leader in advanced polymer textiles.

The fabric is what makes Coolaroo special. Its knitted HDPE is designed for prolonged outdoor exposure, with long-lasting UV protection built into the core of every fibre of the fabric. Coolaroo engineers its shade fabric to retain its colour, flexibility and performance through years of intense UV exposure, including the demanding conditions found in Australia. The knitted construction allows air to circulate and hot air to escape from beneath the sail, while the fibres do not absorb moisture, helping the material resist mould and mildew. Coolaroo shade sails can block up to 95% of harmful UV radiation and are endorsed by Cancer Council Australia.

Coolaroo shade sails are produced in a number of different fabric ranges and performance levels. This page shows only the ranges currently available in this shape. For each range, the fabric, fabric weight and manufacturer’s fabric guarantee are taken directly from our product database so the comparison remains accurate as stock changes.

Four fixing points

All four corners need strong anchors and balanced tension.

Breathable shade

Coolaroo knitted HDPE allows air movement beneath the sail.

Lengthwise coverage

Ideal above dining tables, long patios and narrow spaces.

Structural anchors

Each fixing point must carry the load from a tensioned sail.

Installing a rectangular shade sail

All four anchor points must be structurally suitable for the load from a tensioned sail.

Different fixing heights improve shape and water run-off.

Balance tension across all four corners and leave sufficient adjustment space.

How is a rectangular shade sail fixed?

A rectangular shade sail is tensioned between four strong anchor points.

Turnbuckle

Turnbuckle

The turnbuckle progressively adjusts tension and helps balance all four corners.

Snap hook

Snap hook

The snap hook provides a quick connection between sail and fixing system.

Pad eye or anchor Pad eye or anchor

Pad eye or anchor

The pad eye creates a screwed fixing point; the anchor provides the alternative method.

Allow 280–365 mm for the fittings

With our standard fittings, normally allow 280–365 mm between each sail corner and its anchor point for the turnbuckle, snap hook and anchor fitting. If the anchor point is further away, the connection can be extended using suitably rated steel cable or chain. The supporting structure and anchor point must always be strong enough to withstand the loads from a correctly tensioned shade sail.
